What’s involved in being a Junior Designer at Baxter & Bailey?
Is this a job description?
Yes. It is an overview to help you navigate your job, your responsibilities and the skills needed to do your job. It is not an exhaustive list of tasks.
How can it help me?
By helping you to identify potential areas within your job you can develop.
What skills do I need?
We don’t assume you have them all and don’t worry if you haven’t. We will support you with training and development where required.
Job related
You will demonstrate excellent design abilities both conceptually and in crafting and will develop them constantly through working on a broad range of design disciplines.
You are Mac OS literate and able to use key applications within Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator. You will also have some knowledge of the interface design tool Figma.
You keep an online diary to ensure you are aware of meetings and project deadlines. You will plan your time effectively to ensure that you can manage your workload in the most effective manner.
You are keen to learn in all areas of your work and as a Junior Designer will actively seek out new experiences to develop your skills. A few of the skills you will need to develop include effective written communication, project management, budgeting and finance.
Personal qualities
You have a passion for branding and are committed to a brilliant career in design. Those around you know that you are passionate about design because you demonstrate your energy and enthusiasm for creative work every day.
You are interested and informed about the wider world of design and general current affairs. These wider interests broaden your general knowledge and often inspire your creative work and others around you.
You are open to the ideas of others and take constructive criticism positively. You know if you get involved and stay positive, the overall experience will be rewarding for all involved.
You are intelligent, articulate and approachable. You work well within a team because you remain objective at all times. You are always willing to help and muck in to get the job done. You know how to strike a balance between hard work and fun.
Creativity
You are involved from the initial concept stage of projects through to the solution itself working with the design team. This means your active participation in idea generation sessions and allowing yourself the time and space for new thoughts and ideas to evolve. You will carry out research and help the design team through your energetic and active contribution. However it’s not just simply about gathering research, you are expected to be thinking and formulating opinions as you gather. Looking to identify areas for potential. You will assist in the running of small projects, which will involve you preparing presentation material, taking notes and in some instances presenting to clients wherever possible. By fully involving yourself in these processes you will develop and enhance your own design ability.
Administration
You prepare visuals and produce mockups for the design team. You keep all the relevant paperwork for projects you are working on, filed carefully on the server or close to hand. You ensure that printed creative work is collated and archived into boxes. You ensure that all your digital design work is collected and archived in the correct place on the server and on a daily basis. You also take on more broader company responsibilities (e.g. keeping a check on stationery levels and overseeing the ordering items needed for the studio). You, like everyone else, make sure the studio is kept tidy. You do your bit to ensure that the company runs smoothly.
What can I expect from others?
Creative mentoring
You can rely on more senior members of the design team to support you throughout all your creative work. You understand that they are there to help you and you’re not afraid to ask their opinion and absorb as much of their knowledge and insight as possible. Senior members of the design team regularly review your work and progress. Their aim is to help you progress in your design career.
Practical help and advice
You can rely on more experienced members of the company to help and advise me on more practical matters at work (i.e. administrative work, efficient filing, general organisation, software skills, creative visualisations, mockups and time management skills) You won’t ‘just muddle through’. you will always ask for help when you are unsure about something.
Any questions?
Questions are really important in your role as Junior Designer. Good questions deserve good answers. They will help you get clarity, build confidence and develop better relationships with others. If you have any questions regarding this Job Description then please just ask.
